We all seem to be chasing the wind in an attempt to either be good or look like being good. The first in all its reality will fail and the second is a pure mirage that cannot last long. We are definitely called to be doing good deeds as Jesus did in His ministry on earth yet when we are called to do a not so seemingly good deed like taking a whip and chasing the money changers or using an expensive oil rather than selling it and giving the money to the poor, our so called ‘good’ deed might no longer be considered good anymore. What are we chasing this day? Desire to be good or desiring the glory of God which is our ultimate good while it might at times or many a times look not so good !!!
Here comes the same question that Martha had asked Jesus with respect to her sister Mary. She approached Him and said, “Lord, is it of no concern to You that my sister has left me to do the serving alone? Tell her to help me and do her part.” But the Lord replied to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered and anxious about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part [that which is to her advantage], which will not be taken away from her.”Luke 10: 40,41,42
We often come to this crossroad in our lives to choose between (being or doing) good or His glory. It’s a subtle choice yet something that requires a deep pierce right into the very soul of our heart. An open rebuke (Jesus to Peter), a correction (Paul to Peter), a silence (Jesus to the curious Pilate), a calm sleep (like Jesus in the boat in midst of a storm), an unactioned love (like the Father of the Prodigal son), these are a few of the ‘not so good deeds’ that meant His glory!!
“Teacher, what [essentially] good thing shall I do to obtain eternal life [that is, eternal salvation in the Messiah’s kingdom]?” Jesus answered, “Why are you asking Me about what is [essentially] good? There is only One who is [essentially] good; Mathew 19; 16,17
What is our quest today? To appear being good or doing good or seeking His glory!!! The Scripture clearly shows us that what we think good might most often not be the good that God requires from us. Our minds are finite and so are our thoughts. How can a mortal mind evaluate spiritual things with an earthly yardstick!!
Let’s press on doing good yes definitely yet not placing our hearts on the good deed as a substitute to His glory. A good deed shouldn’t be an action, it’s an outflow of God’s goodness in our lives. Let’s seek to get to know Him – our Heavenly Father and all things will get clearer and evident by His revelation of Himself to us. May the Truth set us free!!
